Davis Hill Development (DHD) is seeking a Solar Project Originator to join our development team. As a Solar Project Originator at DHD Solar, you will play a key role in finding/originating and then beginning development work for community-scale solar and utility-scale projects. You will work closely with the Development Manager and cross-functional teams, providing a leadership role from initial site assessment, through site control, and then throughout development, which is focused on project interconnection and Land Use Permitting and Zoning stages. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, a self-starter attitude, project management capabilities, attention to detail, and effective problem-solving.
The Solar Project Originator will support the DHD development team and will report directly to the Development Manager. The Solar Project Originator will be expected to travel up to 50% of their time. This is a relationship-driven role. Candidates should be confident engaging with rural landowners, agricultural communities, and local stakeholders. Strong verbal communication, active listening, and the ability to establish credibility with a wide range of personalities are essential.
Responsibilities:
● Lead all beginning stages of project development, focusing on site assessment, landowner education and contract negotiations.
● With the support of our geospatial engineers, evaluate potential solar project sites by conducting site assessments, analyzing environmental factors, and assessing technical and economic feasibility. Continuously work to improve and iterate DHD’s site selection processes, and it’s internal GIS-based site origination tool.
● Support business development efforts by participating in proposal development, landowner and client presentations, and fostering relationships with potential landowners, partners and clients.
● Research County, Municipality, and State regulations, bylaws, and ordinances and coordinate materials required for permit submittals
● Coordinate the design and engineering of solar energy systems with DHD’s Construction Management and third-party engineers.
● Continue on with projects which have secured site control, in a support role to the Development Manager in all aspects of later stage development, including securing interconnection agreements, local land use permits, conducting due diligence, and coordinating with various stakeholders including but not limited to landowners, local and ISO-level utilities, and all government agencies.
● Support the Development Manager in creating project schedules and budgets, to ensure development milestones are met and accurate reporting is kept.
● Understand and document electric utility tariffs and legislative changes with a specific attention on Zoning, Siting and Land Use implications.
● Understand and document State and Local permitting regulations, including but not limited to State, County and Municipal land use policies surrounding renewable energy projects and utility-scale projects, trends for and against renewable energy siting, and specific zoning considerations related to renewable energy development and siting.
● Stay up to date with solar policies in DHD active and speculative markets, industry trends, technological advancements, and policy changes related to solar energy development and apply this knowledge to project planning and implementation.
● Work collaboratively and demonstrate a high level of diplomacy with internal and external teams.
● Travel up to 25% of the time for landowner meetings, conferences, etc.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
● Bachelor's degree in Land Use Planning, Engineering, Business, Finance, Development, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
● 1-3 years of experience in renewable energy development, real estate, construction, project management, or a related field (Solar experience preferred but not required)
● Passion and eagerness for Business Development and Sales of complex projects.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to proactively and effectively collaborate with internal teams, external stakeholders, and clients.
● Experience with permitting, land development and/or interconnection of renewable energy preferred but not required (or related field)
● Proficient in project management methodologies, tools, and software to ensure efficient project planning and execution.
● Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and ensure that we are “checking all of the boxes” to ensure success project outcomes.
● Strong problem-solving abilities to identify project risks and propose mitigation strategies and alternative solutions in a fast-paced environment.
● Knowledge of renewable energy policies, incentives, and financial models, is a plus.
